An important element to spiritual health seems to be humility.

Not the false humility of claiming I'm not really as good as you think I am. Not the false humility of pretending I'm lower than I really think I am in order to make sure I'm not perceived as arrogant. Not the kind of false humility that is selfish and needy and dependent in its projected selflessness.

Real humility, recognizing and admitting who I am -- strengths, weaknesses, lightness, darkness, nuance, simplicity, complexity -- as honestly as I can, especially to myself.

NFC Parents Update 1.22

2 February - Bridgetown Night Strike

High school youth from Newberg area churches join together at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, to get a first-hand experience of urban ministry. Bridgetown Ministries serves people who live on the streets of Portland, providing a warm meal, a clothes/blanket/sleeping bags closet, haircuts, foot-washing, and lots of conversations. It's a memorable and safe way to experience urban ministries and to interact with people in a meaningful way. Call me at (503) 538-8381, ext 106, for information on how to get involved. The next scheduled time for work with Bridgetown will be on Thursday, April 12.

3 February - Pizza Skate

We've planned a Pizza Skate for middle school students. Meet at North Valley Friends (4020 N College) at 2 p.m., Friday, February 3. We'll return by 7:30 p.m. Roller skating is at Hillsboro Skate World. Dinner following at Pizza Hut. Cost is $6. Yes, you can invite your friends; but please let us know if you're coming (and how many people you plan to bring). We'll have limited space available, so make sure to reserve a spot by contacting Eric, Leslie, or Jon to let us know you plan to come.

17 February 20 - Jr High Jamboree

This year's theme, Called to be Friends, is based on John 15:13-15. Haley and Matt Krueger will be exploring the idea of what it means to be true friends to those around us as well as friends with God. We will dive into questions such as: "What makes a good friend?" "What does friendship with God really looks like?" and "What to do when friendships get tough." Find more information online. Cost is $120. Scholarships are available.

Youth Group

High school youth group meets each Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Youth House. Middle school youth group meets on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Youth House.

Bible Quizzing

Bible quiz practices take place each Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Youth House. We're studying the New Testament books of Hebrews, I & II Peter with our final quiz meet at Boise Friends (March 10).
